Pay with a card
Use your Volet.com card to pay online, in stores, and for subscriptions -- anywhere Visa or Mastercard is accepted.
Before you start
- Your card must be active and have a sufficient balance. Top up your card before making a purchase.
- Cards are prepaid. If the card balance is insufficient, the transaction is declined. There is no automatic top-up or overdraft.
Pay online
Use your card details (card number, expiry date, CVV) for any online purchase.
- At checkout on a merchant website, select Pay by card (or the equivalent option).
- Enter your card number, expiry date, and CVV. These are available in the card details screen in your Volet.com dashboard.
- Complete the purchase.
3D Secure (Digital Global only). Online purchases on the Digital Global card are protected by 3D Secure 2.0 with frictionless authentication. In most cases, the transaction is approved automatically without requiring you to enter a code. If the card issuer flags the transaction for additional review, you may be asked to verify.
Europe and Asia-Pacific cards do not support 3D Secure. Some online merchants require 3D Secure verification and may decline transactions from cards without it.
Pay in stores
Use a plastic card (Europe or Asia-Pacific) at any POS terminal that accepts Visa or Mastercard. Insert or tap the card and enter your PIN if prompted.
Contactless with Apple Pay or Google Pay (Digital Global only). Add your Digital Global virtual card to Apple Pay or Google Pay, then pay by holding your phone near the POS terminal.
- Open Apple Wallet or Google Wallet on your phone.
- Add your Digital Global card using the card details from your Volet.com dashboard.
- At checkout, hold your phone near the payment terminal and authenticate with Face ID, fingerprint, or device passcode.
Pay for subscriptions
You can use your Volet.com card for recurring payments such as streaming services, software subscriptions, or cloud hosting. Make sure your card balance covers the renewal amount before the billing date -- if the balance is insufficient, the subscription payment fails.
Currency conversion
If you pay in a currency different from your card's currency, the card network (Visa or Mastercard) applies its exchange rate at the time of the transaction.
For currency conversion fees specific to your card program, check the tariff document in your dashboard.
Fees
Purchase fees vary by card program. The fee (if any) is applied automatically to each transaction.
- Check your current fees in the Volet.com dashboard
- See the Volet.com fees page for general rate information
Blocked merchant categories
Card issuers block transactions to certain merchant types (identified by Merchant Category Code, or MCC) for fraud prevention and anti-money laundering compliance. Payments to these categories are automatically declined:
- Wire transfers and money orders (MCC 4829)
- Financial institutions (MCC 6012, 6051)
- Gambling, betting, and lotteries (MCC 7800, 7801, 7802, 7995)
- Securities and brokers (MCC 6211)
- POI funding transactions (MCC 6540)
- MoneySend intercountry transfers (for example, Wise)
Digital Global only — the following additional categories are also blocked:
- Automated fuel dispensers (MCC 5542)
- Fuel dealers (MCC 5983)
- Dating services (MCC 7273)
- Massage parlors (MCC 7297)
If a payment is declined unexpectedly, ask the merchant for their MCC code and check if it falls into one of these categories.
Transaction declined but funds held
If a card purchase is not completed but funds were pre-authorized, they are returned to your card balance within 14 to 60 business days, depending on the merchant's MCC code. The return may not appear as a separate transaction. In most cases, the amount is added back to the card balance automatically.
Transactions with the "Auth" prefix in your transaction history indicate a failed payment attempt. These entries disappear from the statement after a few days and do not affect the balance.
If funds remain held after the expected period, contact the merchant first to confirm whether the transaction went through.
Why does my card have a negative balance?
This happens with foreign-currency transactions. The settlement process has two stages:
- Pre-authorization — funds are blocked on the card at the current exchange rate.
- Final settlement (2--3 days later) — the actual amount is charged at the settlement-day exchange rate.
If the exchange rate changed between pre-authorization and settlement, the final charge may be slightly more than the blocked amount, resulting in a small negative balance. Offline authorizations (car rentals, airlines, gas stations, toll roads) can also cause this.
Volet.com does not charge penalties for a negative balance and does not block the card. Top up the card to clear the negative balance.
If something goes wrong
| Problem | Cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Transaction declined | Insufficient card balance | Top up your card and try again |
| Declined at an online store | Merchant requires 3D Secure (Europe/APAC cards) | Use a Digital Global card for merchants that require 3DS, or try a different payment method |
| Declined — blocked MCC | Merchant belongs to a restricted category | Check the blocked merchant categories list; try a different payment method |
| Card not accepted | Merchant does not accept the card network or type | Try a different merchant or payment method |
| Unexpected charge amount | Currency conversion applied | Check transaction details for the applied exchange rate; settlement takes 2--3 days |
| Funds held after declined payment | Pre-authorization not yet released | Wait 14--60 business days; contact the merchant if not released |
| Negative card balance | FX rate changed between pre-auth and settlement | Top up the card to clear the negative balance |
